If you’re a new therapist or counsellor who dreams of going into private practice so you can experience the freedom and flexibility that comes with being your own boss — then you probably already know how important it is to get the right support for your business.

You’ve probably already heard the nay-sayers telling you how hard going into private practice is … and how it takes years to make it work (if at all)!

You already know how scary and overwhelming it can be, and how crucial it is to get all of the moving pieces of your business in place, at the right time, and in the right order!

You also likely have a good sense that there is a special something that sets apart counsellors and therapists who have full client rosters (not to mention an income that gives them the lifestyle they’ve always wanted) … from those that just struggle to get by.

And you know that you want to figure out all those tricks-of-the-trade, before taking the big leap.

Even if you’ve owned your own business before or have already ventured into private practice part-time, having your own full-time private practice:

Gives You Freedom & Flexibility

Most 9-5 jobs don’t give you the kind of freedom and flexibility that being your own boss does. Imagine being able to set your own hours, do things on your own time and in your own way, work 4 days per week if you like, have weekends off, take holidays and vacations when you want. Owning your own private practice gives you the opportunity to enjoy your life more, and create a better work-life balance so you can focus on what really matters.

Allows You to Feel Passionate About the Work You Do

No one wants to roll out of bed in the morning, just to head to a job they don’t truly love. When you realize what you’re good at (i.e. what kinds of clients you want to work with, and what kinds of problems you have the skills to help resolve) and what lights you up inside (making a connection with people who need exactly the resources and tools that YOU have, and helping them create meaningful change) …. and THEN you take the steps to create a life that lets you do just that — you will wake up each morning full of passion for what you do! You will wake up excited to see clients you love, and journey with them through their successes and breakthroughs, knowing that you have truly been of service.

Creates a Sense of Autonomy

There is nothing quite like knowing that the business you’ve created, the work that you do, and the services you offer, not only generate a pay check that supports you, but your family as well. And that you’ve created something that gives you and your loved ones opportunities for travel and connection, that you otherwise might never have had. Getting known in the community for the great work you do, receiving referrals to clients who can benefit from exactly what you have to offer … and knowing that YOUR hard work did all of this is an unimaginably wonderful feeling that you just doesn’t quite compare to working for someone else!

Generates a Feeling of Being “On-Purpose”

Living our lives with a sense of purpose contributes to our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Knowing that we are waking up in the morning, with work to do that is important  and meaningful, and truly makes a difference in someone else’s life is the epitome of living “on purpose”. And when you realize that all of your hard work is directly benefitting your clients, your family, and you — instead of somebody else’s business, you’ll realize how powerful you are and how important the work you are doing truly is!

Lets You Flex Your Creative Muscles!

Running your own private practice isn’t just about one-on-one work. Once you become your own boss, you have the freedom to flex your creative muscles  and have fun with whatever pursuits light you up, interest you, and inspire you. You’re not bound by anything (other than your legal and ethical guidelines!) … so you can do so much more! In addition to one-on-one work, counsellors and therapists in private practice have the ability to generate other income streams like running groups, in-person and online courses, workshops and retreats. The sky really is the limit in terms of what you can do, and that is an incomparable feeling!

Even though you don’t need me to convince you of how amazing it would be to have your own private practice, the path to getting there is anything but straightforward.

Start my own Private Practice? AMAZING!!!

But I have no idea where to start?!?

A few years ago, you probably came to a realization where you just knew that becoming a therapist and starting your own private practice was the best way for you to make a positive difference in the world. You realized that being a therapist was exactly how you were meant to use your skills, talents, and lived experience to be of service to others.

You worked incredibly hard to go back to school and get all of the training and experience you could, in order to be ready for this huge career transition.

And now the moment is here. You’re nearing the end of school or your practicum, or your time at your former job is coming to an end … and you’ve got a choice to make.

Do you go back to what’s easy?

Or do you take what feels like the biggest risk of your life, and figure out how to go into private practice?

The problem is….

That you don’t really know what you’re doing! You’ve never done anything like this before. You don’t have experience running your own business (or maybe you do, but a private practice feels like a whole other ballgame) and there are just SO many moving pieces!

If you think about it too hard, it’s pretty easy to get overwhelmed with all of the administrative aspects. “How do I register a business? How do I do the budgeting and finances? What forms should I use? Am I meeting all of the legal and ethical requirements? How do I do taxes? How do I keep track of scheduling? Client notes? How do I charge people and issue invoice and receipts?!”

There are just so many parts involved and you know of some of them, but you also know that there are things you don’t know… and you’re afraid you’ll make a big mistake.

You just want to know that you’re taking all the right steps, and have everything in order.

You’ve seen other people struggle to make it in private practice and heard the stories from your supervisors and professors about how hard it is, and how you should have years of experience behind you before even thinking of going into private practice.

How do you make a name for yourself? There are so many other great therapists already out there with more experience … how will you stand out in the crowd? You don’t have the business skills yet … and you’re probably thinking, “who am I to go into private practice anyway?”

“Where will I get clients from? And how do I market myself?!”

Not to mention where all of the start-up costs are going to come from! You’ve likely already been struggling for the past few years to put yourself through school … and taken out all the loans you can. Chances are, you have no idea where the money is going to come from. How are you possibly going to manage the overhead costs of starting up your own practice?

For good reason, you’re scared to take a big risk …

and wind up with more money going out than in!

You’re also scared of being completely isolated in this. You’ve heard that private practice can be lonely and you won’t have any peers or networks of support. It’s easy to feel lost, and you don’t want to disappoint yourself or your family.

There are other people who are relying on you and cheering you on … and you want nothing more than to be successful!

The main reason that people either give up on their dream of going into private practice, or struggle to make it, is because they don’t have an awareness of what all of the moving pieces are.

They don’t have a step-by-step, straightforward plan that takes them from square one to a successful practice, and they don’t have the knowledge & understanding required to market effectively, get and retain clients, and build their reputation

(You’ll receive an email when course registration opens!)

The good news is …

The number of counsellors and therapists out there who have it all figured out and are doing it right is actually minimal. The majority of people you see as your competition feel similarly to you — and they aren’t all as experienced and successful as you might think they are! In all likelihood, they are struggling with the same kinds of concerns and frustrations that you are.

You want to avoid the mistakes and pitfalls that others have made, and get it right the first time.

I’m here to tell you that it is completely possible to be aware of all of the moving pieces, in advance, and execute a thoughtfully planned out road map. A roadmap that will take you from square one …. to your thriving, successful private practice, without all of the unnecessary struggle, wasted time and energy, and going even further into debt

The 4 Mindset Shifts Required to

Achieve Success in Private Practice

(So you can avoid wasting time and money, and get things right the first time!)

Mindset Shift #1

There are MORE THAN ENOUGH clients!

There is a scarcity mentality that exists in our culture – that there is never enough, that we will always be in competition, and that we have to stand out and be the best in our field, in order to be successful.

And I’m here to tell you that it just isn’t true

There are 7 billion people on this planet, and 36 million people in Canada. 36 million. Now, granted that not every one of those people needs a therapist – a lot do. And I guarantee you there are nowhere near enough counsellors and therapists to be effectively serving the needs of all those people.

Nowhere in the literature and research do you ever read about the over-abundance of mental health professionals, and how well the population as a whole is doing in terms of mental and emotional well-being. When was the last time you read an article about counsellors being out of work because there aren’t enough people who need support with their mental health? If that was true, our society would look A WHOLE LOT different than it does! I’d like to hope for an incredible shift in our humanity during my lifetime, but if I had to guess, I’d say that things are more likely to continue in the direction that they are — at least for the foreseeable future.

And what that means, is that there are not enough qualified mental health professionals to serve the needs of the public. It’s time to let go of this scarcity mentality that there is too much competition and not enough clients …. it simply isn’t true

Mindset Shift #2

Running your own private practice, IS NOT THAT DIFFICULT.

There, I said it. Seriously … I’m telling you the truth. All of those nay-sayers, your supervisor and your profs, who lament about how difficult and challenging private practice is, and tell you you’re not ready, and that you’re too inexperienced … (with all due respect) they’re wrong.

Being in private practice has nothing to do with how good you are as a therapist, or how experienced you are. Being in private practice doesn’t mean you are holding yourself out as an experienced, highly competent therapist.

All it means is that you’d like to have your own business, make your own hours, and not have to answer to a manager or boss.

Like any competent therapist, you will still have a clinical supervisor, you will still engage in peer supervision, you will still attend trainings & professional development, you will still network, and have colleagues. You just won’t do it under somebody else’s business name.

Having a private practice has very little to do with your skills as a therapist — it has everything to do with your skills as a business owner

Mindset Shift #3

You already have what it takes to learn all of the skills needed to be successful in private practice.

Success in private practice is not an elusive formula. It seems that way at the beginning, and when you haven’t had the experience of what it’s like to be in private practice.

But there are many professionals (like myself) who have gone before you, and know exactly what’s required — including what steps to take and when, what the common pitfalls are, and exactly what to do to be successful.

You don’t need to get an MBA to learn how to run your own private practice. There are some skills you need to learn, and pieces you’ll need to understand how to navigate (even some old patterns you’ll come up against in yourself that will need to be re-worked!), but you already have everything it takes inside of you.

It’s just a matter of receiving the right knowledge, information, and mentorship, to execute it correctly.

Mindset Shift #4

Opening your own practice doesn’t have to sink you further into debt, or take years to earn a substantial income.

I’ve known people who have spent upwards of $10,000 to launch their private practice. They took out (another) bank loan, rented a fancy office space (or renovated one!), and spent thousands of dollars on office furnishings, branding, and advertising.

Although it’s wonderful if you can afford to do that, most of us can’t. And the reality is, you don’t have to.

There are ways to go about opening your private practice that only cost you a few hundred dollars (or less!) and don’t require a ton of start up costs. There are also ways to manage the risk of going into private practice so you build up in a sustainable way, don’t spend money you don’t have, and avoid taking huge and potentially disastrous financial risks.

Going into private practice does not have to be an expensive and risky venture!

Here’s what you really need to know…

Even though the number of counsellors and therapists in Canada is steadily growing, with thousands of people graduating every year with dreams of private practice — there is a reason why some will struggle and others will flourish in private practice.

And the main reason for this is because even though anyone can take the initial steps into private practice, but few have the knowledge and understanding of what it takes to truly be successful.

But as long as you can avoid the common pitfalls and mistakes, and you don’t go in blindly, there is every reason why your dream of private practice can become a concrete, brick-and-mortar, incoming earning, full-client-roster reality!

A reality that gives you freedom, flexibility, a sense of passion & purpose, autonomy, and creativity.

The key ingredient is a course that teaches you step-by-step, exactly where to start and what actions to take to build, launch, and grow your practice, while avoiding the pitfalls and common mistakes.

And with your permission, that’s what I’d love to show you how to create.

The 8-week Build Your Private Practice Mastermind Course will …

Give you a clear roadmap that shows you where to start, what steps to take and when.

Reduce stress, confusion and overwhelm, and help you feel not so lost and alone.

Give you confidence and a sense of empowerment, knowing that you’re following a well-worn path that someone just like you has already used to be successful.

Within a matter of months, give you a return on your investment. Knowing that the money you spent on this course gave you the tools and strategies you could immediately implement to get the results you’re seeking so you can start seeing clients and earning income.

Save you valuable time, money and energy by avoiding common mistakes and pitfalls, and receiving accountability and support along the way.

What Others Have Said About The Course …

In August 2016 I completed my MACP and was eager to start working. I was not sure if private practice was my path, but I was sure I have already defined my passion in terms of psychotherapy. I took this online program, and I just can say that Christine Hakkola did not only give me the tools to start my journey, but also helped me to discover my strength and areas of opportunity. I really enjoyed the MACP program, but unfortunately there was no direction on how to start a private practice, how to make connections, how to make business plans or marketing. I was feeling totally lost before taking this program. I am still building my practice, but I feel more confident, happy and able to make strategic decision. I really recommend Christine.

Registered Psychotherapist, Toronto, ON

I took Christine’s course in anticipation of planning to open my own practice upon graduation. As a former teacher and long ago office manager, I appreciated Christine’s teaching skills and knowledge of counselling and private practice along with the well-designed, brilliant handouts. This course doesn’t just inform, it empowers! I highly recommend it to you all.

Registered Counselling Therapist (C), Annapolis Valley, NS

I found it very helpful to have someone who has graduated my program and has been successful in private practice after graduating. I liked the checklists and the marketing suggestions – it gives me a lot of food for thought and has really gotten me on the right track. I have accomplished much more than I think I would have if I had not taken this course. Christine has also given me lots of confidence and has helped me to believe in myself.

Canadian Certified Counsellor, St. Catharines, ON

The Mastermind program was just what I needed to get me focused and ready for my private practice start up. It first directed me to articulate the why behind my decision to open a private practice and then helped me to identify my niche.  I loved the practical checklist for readiness that kept me on target and goal focused leading up to my launch.

Registered Psychotherapist, Burlington, ON

I have loved Christine’s clarity, her wisdom and how she values time and skill. She makes a clear distinction between therapist role and role of business owner. She has helped me to feel confident in my ability and my market-ability. I would HIGHLY recommend her. It is well worth every penny.
